isaac's bday

my hallowed* hooch's 6th bday... our little family celebrated with a miniature sized cake for him.

*for the record... i don't really think isaac is holy (even though i do love him a lot)... its the most meaningful word i could use to form an alliteration

cafe ish {surry hills}

when dext first told me about cafe ish, i felt a nice sense of familiarity because "...ish" by 1927 was the first album that i'd ever bought (back in primary school!). i thought to myself, if a cafe is named cafe ish it had to be good. and... just as i had anticipated, the food is innovative & absolutely scrumtilly-umptious, definitely "compulsory hero" material!

located in surry hills, on the corner of campbell & foster streets, the little cafe was already buzzing with people tucking into their sunday morning breakfast when we arrived just after 10am. shortly after arriving, we were served a little sunday morning "pick me up" by the owner josh. a few little cups of cold, crisp sake that had a soft subtle flavour of rockmelon infused into it. we were off to a good start! bring on the menu!!

after the sake, i moved onto cafe ish's signature coffee, the wattle macaccino made with wattle & macadamia & a photographer's delight!

mister & dext's breakfast - not just your standard beef patty + sesame seed bun hamburger.

ella's had this for breakfast and we just couldn't stop wondering how many emu eggs does it take to make one serve??!?

i really can't go past soft shell crab when its on offer, nor can i forgo a good eggs benedict, so you can imagine my excitement & the choice that cafe ish had already made for me just by having this on the menu, mercie & i went for the same.

dext (above right) & mercie (below left), showcase the selection of salt (chilli, hawaiian volcanic & citrus) we could choose to accompany our dishes (sake, below right).

a nice cosy atmosphere to hang out to eat the most important meal of the day with the most important people in your life.

if you are after some good wholesome breakfast with a modern australian japanese fused twist, cafe ish is your breakfast destination to head to.

paul's kitchen

if paul would let me nominate him for the next masterchef show, i sure would. he's always spoiling the mister & i with his cooking.

as a tribute to our trip to japan earlier in may this year, he made tonkatsu ramen for us. the soup base was made from scratch using lots of pork & pork bone slow-cooked, japanese style tamago (soft boiled egg) & mouth-watering pieces of pork. feast your eyes on the wonderful meal we enjoyed.

thanks so much paul for sharing, as you know, we thoroughly enjoyed it!

1945 dutch east indies cuisine {pyrmont}

a couple of pics from waaaay back in june when we went out on a date night with some friends to a new one of a kind restaurant in pyrmont serving dutch east indies cuisine.

1945 pays homage to the type of cuisine that was invented in indonesia when the country was under dutch rule in the 19th century. the  "rijsttafel" which literally translates to rice table, is a lavish meal adapted by the dutch from the indonesian feast known as nasi pedang that consists of many side dishes served in small portions accompanied by rice. the dishes represent many of the ethnic cultures within the indonesian archipelago.

we went for the grand rijsttafel, which was like having our own little personal buffet. the fun thing about eating something like the grand rijsttafel is the array of dishes you get to try, a bit like a wine tasting tour!

presented on a piece of banana leaf are:
  • two mounds of rice, one is nasi koening flavoured with turmeric and chicken stock & second is the nasi oedoek flavoured with coconut and lemon grass;
  • tempe teri katjang goreng which is a spicy mix of soybeans, anchovies & peanuts
  • ajam panggang ketjap which is grilled spicy chicken drumsticks;
  • pork satay skewers;
  • perkedel djagoeng which is a corn fritter;
  • rendang daging which is beef braised with spices and coconut milk; &
  • prawn chips.

lots of food blogs have blogged about this place - so i won't go into anymore details.... you simply have to google 1945 pyrmont to find out more & check out their reviews & pics.

dynamic doggy duo

we love it when otto comes to stay with us, his puppy ways are endearing. otto is a black mini-schnauzer and not quite a year old yet. he is still yet to grow into his legs and feet, so its really cute to watch him during playtime & wander around in his lanky legs & with the curiosity that little ones have when everything is new & fresh. i love it when he cocks his head from side to side when he hears curious sounds.

usually after a day out in the yard with isaac he is very tired by the time we get home from work. still, he attempts to follow us around like a little shadow and he loves to sit on your feet. when we feed him his dinner, he gobbles it up in a flash! then after dinner, he sleeps like a rock from a big day running around.

when otto first came to stay, he was quite the escape artist. escaping to roam the neighbourhood & giving us the fright of our lives when we got home to find him gone & worrying whether something bad had happened to him. thankfully, he would befriend a nice neighbour who kept him safe each time & contacted his mummy & daddy about their missing child. i must stress to pet owners to make sure you microchip your pets AND put your contact details on your pets collar!

elegantly lisa

way back in mid-july this year i received a surprise call from a good friend, lisa with a special request to have some photos taken for her to submit to sbs for their insights programme. she would be appearing as a guest on their series to discuss issues that concerned everyday australians and provide some insight to the upcoming federal election. being on tv was exciting news!

wow! lisa was getting more than 15 minutes of fame and will have a real appearance on tv where she will talk about her views and debate with some politicians about issues that are important. she ain't just a random passer-by when the camera is rolling! i thought it was pretty cool and was very excited for her!

of course i was very excited for me too! WOW!! i had an excuse to take photos for an afternoon and hang out together, how exciting was that!

i have the pleasure of introducing...

the very elegant and beautiful - lisa
...and i absolutely love the polka dot dress

p.s. if u think i took my time posting this blog, well they still haven't worked out who has won the election yet, have they?

brasserie bread {banksmeadow}

a couple of weekends ago, mister & I made a little outing to the east side. first stop was to a sashimi demonstration class at chef's armoury (post to come), followed by brunch at the renowned artisan bread shop/cafe with the most beautiful mercie who is our gourmet eating buddy. we are very lucky to be selected to accompany her on her gourmet eating spree (she has a list of places to visit)!

according to their website, brasserie bread is a realisation of tony papas' dream, which together with michael klausen they wanted to establish a bakery that produces bread to the quality that would be recognised as the perfect accompaniment to sydney's great dining experience, & so brasserie bread was established.

brasserie bread is located at 1737 botany road, banksmeadow in an old saw-tooth warehouse. when you step inside the shop/cafe/bakehouse, you are immediately surrounded by tables, baskets and shelves of gourmet loaves, jams, oils, danishes, friands & gourmet little cakes & pastries.

when we went (which was on a saturday), the entire place was buzzing with life and chatter. there was even a baking school! On this particular morning, the baking school was attended by a bunch of children, on a baking party - excitedly baking away and then showing off their hot artisan creations to their patiently waiting mothers who were chatting on a long table to each other over coffees. the staff were friendly & the food was good... the bread... of course was great. thumbs up, we recommend a visit if you are in the area.

our lunch choices...
mister d's on the left. mercie & mine on the right

mercie was my model for the day...
brasserie bread should use these for promotional pics!!
the stewed berry & honeycomb cream sourdough pancakes were moreish.
we highly recommend this!!!

we ate, we bought, we lurved brasserie bread!!

strawberry + whipped cream pavlova {homebaked}

series 2 of the masterchef challenge is on channel 10 currently and on the nights that i am home and on time to watch it i get inspired to cook & bake. my first inspiration in this series was donna hay's pavlova... mashmallowy soft on the inside with a crunchie outer crust (my favourite part of a pavlova). we had a dinner invite to peggy + paul's house last weekend so i thought i'd give the pav a whirl! paul is the masterchef in our little group of friends whilst all i ever do is, bring a salad/drinks/fruit/or store bought dessert... so this dinner i thought i'd spoil them with some home baking.

i was feeling confident that i would be able to make this dessert a success because donna hay made it look so easy... all the while i was praying that it would work out.

can you believe that we bought this 10 years ago
(with the intention that i was going to be a domestic goddess... hehe)
we just opened & used it last sat!

ta-da!!

r i l e y | baby love

i've known riley for nearly 9 months and was in constant contact with him and his beautiful mummy 5 days a week, however only got to spend face-to-face QT time with him for the first time on the easter long weekend just passed... we had a lovely time together.

i'm amazed that he is such a happy, laid back little fellow especially when he has had to endure through such high pressure & stress as is his mummy's and my work environment in the first 9 months of his life.  we spent a little while capturing these beautiful piccies together and even though he was a little sleepy he was always the trooper & stayed awake for these gorgeous photos with mum & dad.

hello riley and welcome to the world!
